Rules, Regulation & Deadlines

GAME PLAY: Wheelchair basketball will consist of half court, 3-on-3 games. First team to 15 points wins. However, the winning team must win by at least a two point margin. It may be necessary to play to a time, rather than a score, to help facilitate movement between games. In this case, the team with the highest score at the end of the time would be the winner. Games will be limited to fifteen minutes with a running clock. Depending on the number of teams in each division, it will be up to the Tournament Director to determine if the tournament will be pool play or double elimination.

BALL POSSESSION AND SCORING: A coin toss will determine which team gets possession of the ball to start the game. After every scored basket, the ball will change possession. At every change of possession, a player from the offensive team must carry the ball beyond the 3-point line (a pre-determined point) before continuing play.

A. Teams score by either regular 2-point baskets or by 3-point shots taken from outside the 3-point circle.

B. After a basket has been scored or a foul called, a player must put the ball in play from a line past the 3-point line, above the foul key.

C. All held balls will be put into play behind the 3-point line with possession given alternately to each team.

D. On defensive rebounds or steals, players must return the ball by dribble or pass across the 3-point line before a basket may be attempted. Once across the line, they do not have to pass the ball before shooting.

E. Any player may convert an offensive rebound.

F. After a basket, the team scored upon will put the ball in play.

G. The 3-second free throw lane rule will apply to all offensive players.

H. Substitutions may be made after a basket or an out of bounds play.

I. Time will not be stopped to discuss any call.

J. If the game ends in a tie after regulation time, there will be a 2-minute overtime period. Possession will be determined by a coin toss. Ties at the end of any overtime period will result in successive one minute periods until the tie has been broken, with possession alternating each overtime period.

FOULS AND TIMEOUTS: A referee will determine fouls. If no referee is present, team players should try to agree on the foul amicably. The fouled team has one free throw, with the ball changing possession afterward. Each team will be allowed two 30-second timeouts. Teams may use their timeouts as they wish. No extra timeouts are allowed.

TEAM REQUIREMENTS: Team will consist of 3 or 4 players. Three-person teams require at least one disabled athlete. Four-person teams require at least two disabled athletes.

PAPER ENTRY FORMS: Paper entry forms will be accepted with a $10 processing fee per team. Registering online saves time, money and trees. If registering via the paper entry form, please rate your team as being Above Average, Average or Below Average. List this information in the Additional Details/Special Instructions section of the entry form.

SCHEDULING NOTE: It is Nebraska Sports Council policy to not release team or divisional information until after the entry deadline. With teams waiting until on or near the deadline to enter, releasing data prior to that day does not provide an accurate picture of the tournament field and serves only to discourage those taking a wait-and-see approach.

All teams are encouraged to take advantage of the early entry discount and enter prior to that deadline, which in turn generates additional interest as teams attract one another. In the rare event that a division does not supply enough teams to warrant a viable tournament, teams will be given the option to move to another division, or be issued a refund. We appreciate the understanding of coaches and parents on this matter and would encourage teams to enter early and trust that there will be adequate competition in all divisions.
