CHS boys get a chance on the pitch at Cornhusker State Games – Columbus Telegram

Intent on proving their mettle in Class A and with the potential to cap the most prolific scoring career in program history, Columbus High boys soccer saw neither of those come to fruition this spring.

A cancellation of the season prevented last year’s Class B runner-up from showing its worth in Class A. It also prematurely ended the career of prolific scorer Ivan Lopez.

Thanks to a new event at the Cornhusker State Games, however, not all was lost for the Discoverers. CSG opened a high school soccer division this summer and hosted a tournament that included pool play then a knockout stage.

Columbus powerlifters find success at Cornhusker state games – Columbus Telegram

Fifteen powerlifters from Columbus and Shelby competed at the 2020 Cornhusker State games on July 18. All of them set new personal records and placed in the top three for their age and weight class.

The group included lifters ranging from 10 to 56 years old with sport backgrounds in gymnastics, softball, soccer, football, baseball, basketball and wrestling.

Omaha Skutt wins unofficial state soccer championship in Cornhusker State Games shootout – Lincoln Journal Star

Omaha Skutt is the unofficial state champion in high school boys soccer for the 2020 season.

The Nebraska School Activities Association season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Cornhusker State Games added a high school soccer division for the first time to allow the teams to play a few matches and get an idea of who some of the better teams would have been this year. The tournament was the idea of Papillion-La Vista South assistant coach Nik Stevenson, and that team reached the final.

Norfolk Jr. sprinter dominates in the west, now heads East – News Channel Nebraska

This month she earned gold medals for the 100 and 200 meter dash at the Amateur Athletic Union at Las Vegas, and again at the Cornhusker State Games.

Papio South, Omaha Skutt reach championship match of high school soccer tournament – Lincoln Journal Star

Papillion-La Vista South and Omaha Skutt will play Sunday morning for the unofficial state championship in high school boys soccer this year.

After the high school season was canceled because of COVID-19, the Cornhusker State Games added a high school division for soccer to give teams a chance to at least play a few matches together this year, and 14 teams played in the two-week tournament.

Practicing social distancing, shoreline fishing a catch at the Cornhusker State Games – Lincoln Journal Star

There is an old fishing adage that says: “If you can read my shirt while fishing, you’re fishing too close to me.”

That saying held true Saturday at the Cornhusker State Games in the shoreline fishing event at Holmes Lake. Anglers kept their distance from each other, respecting social and State Games guidelines in dealing with the coronavirus.
