LINCOLN, Neb. (June 26, 2019) – The Cornhusker State Games Torch Run will arrive in Lincoln Friday, June 28, for pregame festivities at the Saltdogs game vs the Sioux City Explorers at Haymarket Park.
The Torch will be carried onto the ballfield at 6:45 p.m. by Nebraska National Guard soldiers running in cadence. National anthem and first-pitch ceremony will follow with the game scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. Dr. Ben Buettenback, representing the Nebraska Chiropractic Physicians Association, sponsor of the Torch Run, will throw out the first pitch. Buettenback played football at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1995-1999.
Following the game, fans can enjoy fireworks as part of the Saltdogs’ Fireworks Friday series. Nebraska Sports Council officials will be on hand sharing information about the 2019 Cornhusker State Games. Game tickets can be purchased at Saltdogs.com or at the Haymarket Park box office.
The route into Lincoln begins Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Optimal Health Chiropractic in David City and will proceed south on Highway 15. Runners are scheduled to make the turn east onto Hwy 34 in Seward at around 2:30 p.m. and should arrive in Lincoln at the junction of Highway 34 and Fletcher Ave. around 5:30 p.m. Motorists along the route are asked to slow down and use caution when passing runners and escort vehicles.
Similar to Olympic tradition, local runners carry the torch in one-mile segments across the state as a precursor to the Cornhusker State Games. With competition available in more than 70 sports, officials expect 10,000-plus athletes for the Games, which takes place July 13-28. Register or learn more at CornhuskerStateGames.com.
