Nebraska Sports Council (NSC) officials have announced that Kathi Wieskamp has been named the Honorary Marshal of the Parade of Athletes for the 2022 Cornhusker State Games (CSG). Kathi is the director of athletics and activities at LPS. She will be retiring June 30 after 33 years with the district. Wieskamp took over the districtwide director job in 2013 after three years as athletic director at Lincoln Southeast. Before that, she served as assistant athletic director, athletic academic program coordinator and attendance coordinator at Lincoln North Star. She also taught physical education and coached volleyball at Southeast.

“I truly love the work I have been a part of in both LPS and with the NSAA over the past 33 years,” Wieskamp said in a statement to the Lincoln Journal Star. “Regardless of the position I have held, my goal has always been to work hard, impact others positively and serve the people I work with and work for.”

NSC Executive Director, Dave Mlnarik said Wieskamp was an easy choice for the Opening Ceremonies Committee.

“It is an honor to recognize Kathi Wieskamp as our Parade Marshal. It is tradition to select a Nebraskan who has dedicated his/her career to sports. With all that Kathi has accomplished as a coach, athlete director, media member, and board member, she is the perfect choice for this year’s marshal,” Mlnarik said.

The Parade of Athletes will kick off the CSG Opening Ceremonies at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 15 at Seacrest Field in Lincoln.  Other show elements include skydivers, fireworks, a mascot showcase, a freestyle moto-cross exhibition, and the lighting of the caldron by a mystery torchlighter. Registration is open for the Cornhusker State Games.  All registered participants receive free admission to the Opening Ceremonies and SportFest, which includes a free meal, with their paid entry fee. Those registered by June also receive a free shirt. Officials issued a reminder that entry fees will increase April 15 for most sports.

The Cornhusker State Games offers competition in 70 sports for athletes of all ages and abilities. Most events take place July 15-24 at venues in Lincoln, Omaha and other Nebraska. For more information on Cornhusker State Games, visit CornhuskerStateGames.com.
